111th COVID-related death reported in Richmond County

ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond County Health Department on Thursday announced the 14th COVID-related death in less than two months.

The latest brings the county’s overall total since April of 2020 to 111.

According to the Health Department, the race and gender breakdown is as follows: 19 African American females, 16 African American males, three “other race” females, one “other race” male, two Hispanic females, two American Indian males, 34 Caucasian females and 34 Caucasian males.

All patients have been between the ages of 31 and 95: 31 have been 80 or older; 30 have been in their 70s; 32 in their 60s; 14 in their 50s; three in their 40s and one who was 31.

Based on previous reports, the latest death was that of an “other race” female in her 50s.

Of the county’s deaths, 83 have been at a hospital, 22 have passed away in another healthcare facility and six have died outside of a health setting.

There have now been 58 COVID-related deaths in the county so far this year, including 13 in February and 23 in January.

When asked via email on Wednesday, Interim Health Director Cheryl Speight would not say if or how many of those who have died were vaccinated.

According to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, the state’s COVID-related death toll is now 13,806, an increase of 47 since Monday.

Nearly 16,000 Richmond County residents (36%) have been fully vaccinated and 40% are partially vaccinated, according to NCDHHS.

Vaccines are available at the Health Department Monday-Thursday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Fridays from 8-11 a.m. There is no charge and no appointment necessary.

There will also be a vaccine clinic Sunday at the Dobbins Heights Community Center, and a two-day clinic Aug. 16-17 at Richmond Community College.
