ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond County Health Department reported 34 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, with an increase of 20 in Hoffman.
Although many of Monday’s new cases came from Morrison Correctional Institute, records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety show no increase in the 56 active cases at the prison.
According to county records, the number of active coronavirus cases in Hoffman went from 15 on Saturday to 41 on Monday to 61 on Tuesday.
The Health Department’s update shows that 23 residents are presumed to have recovered from the previous day, causing the number of active cases to increase by only 11 to 189. Of those, 179 are under home isolation and 10 are hospitalized.
Richmond County has now had a total of 1,349 positive cases, 1,133 recoveries and 12,321 negative test results, according to the Health Department.
Just this month, health officials have reported 302 new cases (76 in the past two days) and eight deaths.
September saw the most cases in the county (358) for one month: 49 the first week; 106; the second week; 91 the third week; 79 the fourth week; and 33 the final few days of the last week.
The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services reported 1,578 new cases statewide, an increase of more than 400 from Monday.

Sixty of the state’s 100 counties that have now experienced more than 1,000 total cases: Alamance, Beaufort, Bladen, Brunswick, Burke, Buncombe, Cabarrus, Caldwell, Catawba, Carteret, Craven, Franklin, Chatham, Cleveland, Columbus, Cumberland, Davidson, Duplin, Durham, Edgecombe, Forsyth, Gaston, Granville, Guilford, Halifax, Harnett, Henderson, Hoke, Iredell, Johnston, Lee, Lenoir, Lincoln, McDowell, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Moore, Nash, New Hanover, Onlsow, Orange, Pender, Pitt, Randolph, Richmond, Rowan, Robeson, Rockingham, Rutherford, Sampson, Scotland, Stanly, Surry, Union, Vance, Wake, Watauga, Wayne, Wilkes and Wilson.
Tyrell County has had the fewest number of total cases at 127, followed by Camden (133) and Madison (159).
The total numbers (including recoveries) for surrounding counties are as follows:
- Mecklenburg -32,038 (the only other counties to top 10,000 are Wake with 19,952 and Guilford with 10,571)

All numbers are from DHHS except Moore, which are from the local health department, as there has been a discrepancy with the state.
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control is reporting 1,435 total cases and 42 deaths in Chesterfield County and 1,065 cases and 12 deaths in Marlboro County.
