68 new COVID cases, 119 recoveries reported in Richmond County over weekend

ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond County Health Department on Monday reported nearly 70 new cases of COVID-19 from the weekend.

The 68 new positive cases — an average of 22.6 over the past three days —brings January’s total to 587. There were just over 400 for both October and November and more than 800 in December.

The Health Department also reported that 119 more people are considered to be recovered, dropping the number of active cases to 447. Active cases reached a record high of 504 on Jan. 14.

Statewide numbers have been steadily dropping over the past few days from 9,853 Jan. 14, to 6,811 on Jan. 17, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. DHHS did not release any numbers for Jan. 18. The case count has been more than 5,000 each day this month with six days topping 9,000 and peaking at 11,581 on Jan. 9.

The number of those hospitalized with COVID1-19 across the state dropped to 3,862 on Jan. 16, the lowest since Jan. 10.

The Health Department reported 24 local COVID-related hospitalizations on Monday. Only two other days (Jan. 13,14) have had that many.

FirstHealth on Monday reported 102 of its 347 patients (29.4%) were COVID-positive. Scotland Memorial Hospital reported 40 isolated patients.

Richmond County is included in the Mid Carolina Regional Healthcare Coalition, along with Moore, Montgomery, Hoke, Cumberland, Sampson, Chatham, Alamance and Orange counties.

Across the coalition, there are 375 ICU beds in use, and 96 empty; 2,110 impatient beds in use, 681 empty, and 510 unreported or understaffed.

Last week, DHHS announced that residents 65 years old and older can now get the vaccine, along with all health care workers.

Free COVID-19 testing will continue throughout the month in the parking lot behind the Health Department. Testing will run from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, except when closed for lunch from noon-12:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Of all the tests performed on county residents, 25,319 have returned a negative result and 3,289 have been positive.

As of Jan. 17, there had been 8,083 COVID-related deaths statewide. Richmond County has had 61, including eight this month. October has had the most with 15, followed by 13 in December.
