Today is the anniversary of the attack on the Capitol. Despite those who would downplay the assault, it was an attempt to overturn our government, regardless of how amateurish. The people who breached the Capitol and the people who encouraged it wanted to stop the transfer of power. History tells us they will very likely try again. 

The conversations I’ve been having with Democrats lately are depressing. It’s not just that they are resigned to losing Congress in 2022, it’s that they are resigned to losing our democracy in 2024.

Yesterday, the North Carolina House swore in a new member from Gaston County. Donnie Loftis replaced Dana Bumgardner who passed away recently. Loftis is a former county commissioner who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6. Democrats walked out of the chamber when he was sworn in. Loftis is part of the disloyal opposition, people willing to overthrow the government instead of accept the outcome of an election. 

FBI agents across the nation are tracking down and arresting Trump supporters who walked into the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 protest that turned into a brawl. Scores of protestors have already been charged with unlawful entry — “knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds without lawful authority.” The media is treating this as a heinous and self-evident offense, but my own experience at Washington protests makes me wary of treating transgressions as treason.

The political hysteria unleashed by last week’s clash at the Capitol between police and Trump protestors poses a growing danger to Americans’ constitutional rights.

Rep. G.K. Butterfield wants statues of former North Carolina Govs. Charles B. Aycock and Zebulon B. Vance removed from the U.S. Capitol, along with other monuments that seven Democratic legislative leaders call “shameful reminders of slavery and segregation.”

RALEIGH — Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper ordered Confederate monuments on the grounds of the State Capitol removed “to protect public safety.” But he won’t say who allowed a mob of protesters to take over the Capitol grounds earlier, toppling statues from two of those monuments.
