ELLERBE — The northern end of Richmond County will soon be upgraded for high-speed internet service.

RiverStreet Networks announced last week that it would be expanding its fiber optic network in the Ellerbe service area.

According to a press release, construction of the network kicked off Aug. 10 with a groundbreaking ceremony at DeWitt’s Outdoor Sports.

The release states that once the network is complete, more than 4,000 homes and businesses in the area will have access to internet speeds of up to 250Mb per second.

“We are excited to offer more homes and businesses in our Ellerbe service area the opportunity to get ultra-high-speed fiber Internet with excellent customer service at competitive rates,” said Eric Cramer, president and CEO of RiverStreet, which is based in Wilkesboro.

With the fiber optic upgrade, RiverStreet says customers will have a faster and more reliable connection, unlimited usage, less vulnerability to glitches, clearer signals, secure transmissions and increased property values.

“Today — at home, at work, at school, and in government — we all depend on the Internet to power our lives,” Cramer said. “Investing in broadband and fiber networks is an investment in our rural communities, helping to create the best possible future for all of us.”

According to the RiverStreet website, there is already fiber access east of Interstate 73-74 and north of Millstone Road; and construction is underway along Jones Springs Church Road and Windblow Road in the Derby area.

The areas slated for future build are mostly east of the interstate and along N.C. 73., up to Norman and west toward the Pee Dee River, as well as some areas south of Derby.

Last year, the Richmond County Board of Commissioners approved committing $100,000 toward an $8.9 million infrastructure project by Charter Communications-Spectrum to expand internet access across the county, specifically in the Mangum and Cordova areas.
