Shooting Victim Succumbs to Wounds; Murder Charges Pending Against Suspect

ROCKINGHAM – The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office will upgrade charges against a suspect in connection with a shooting that occurred on Wednesday, Sept. 5th.

Clemmie Lee Covington, 59, of Pauline Drive in Rockingham was arrested and initially charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury as well as possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The victim of the shooting later succumbed to her wounds on Friday; Covington may now be charged with murder.

On 9/5/2018, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a gunshot victim on Roberta Drive in Rockingham.

Deputies arrived and located a female victim with what appeared to be a single gunshot wound.

EMS arrived and transported the victim to FirstHealth Richmond where she was later air lifted to an undisclosed hospital

The victim was initially listed in critical but stable condition.

Deputies were able to talk with the victim before she was transported and determined a suspect.

Covington was located at his residence a short time later and taken into custody without incident.

Covington was arrested, charged and placed in the Richmond County Detention Center with no bond allowed. 

Investigators believe the incident started over an argument involving a vehicle.

It is believed that Covington and the victim had been in a relationship for a number of years.
