COLUMN: Nothing to brag about

Mac Davis famously sang that it was hard to be humble, when you are perfect in every way. I know for a fact that I am not perfect in every way and I would more than freely admit that I am imperfect in most every way.

It has been a long time since I was a teenager. For some of you, it has been an even longer time, and for a very few of you that read the column, you still are teenagers.

A co-worker and I had a conversation about generations. I am older than him by about 20 years and we often have conversations like this. While he is of a different generation, some of his thoughts and ideas are more in line with generations before his.

COLUMN: What's in a name — for a pet?

There was something I saw on social media not long ago that at first struck me as odd or funny, but once I gave it a little thought, made perfect sense.

There was this post on Facebook that said something to the effect that we have given all of our pets names and go to great lengths to remember them, but we never tell them our names.

COLUMN: Confessions of a sax addict

In the wake of the seemingly never-ending stream of public confessions, I figure it was only a matter of time before my indiscretions came to light. A lot of you know me as a wholesome, mild mannered newspaper columnist. My columns are mostly family friendly. I do not use profanity and such in my column. The issue isn't so much with the column, but with me. I have led a double life and before it leaks in this very paper, I am going to get out in front of it and own up to the cross that I have to bear. You see, folks, I am a sax addict.

I imagine it goes without saying that I am not a huge fan of our so-called instant society.

Before I get into this week's column, allow me to warn some of you that you might find it offensive. A few of you might think I am an awful man and an even awful-er husband. I know there is no such word as “awful-er,” but since I am starting off letting you know I might upset some of you, I might as well upset any English teachers who may be reading.

I guess I am what some people call a good listener. There are so many nuances to speech and such that I cannot help to be at least an adequate listener.

This week's column is another one of those where I just put together a few random thoughts I have had throughout the last week or so. I can assure you that none of them individually warrant a whole column devoted to them, but collectively, they might take up a few inches of space on a newspaper page.

COLUMN: Are you comfortable?

I had always wondered about people when asked if they would like a life different from the one they had, they would almost always say they just wanted to be comfortable.
