ROCKINGHAM — Police seized several weapons and multiple rounds of ammunition after a man reportedly shot into a vehicle early Tuesday morning.


According to an incident report from the Rockingham Police Department, 30-year-old Gregory Lamont Jones, of Rockingham, is accused of firing into a 2019 Nissan Rogue, damaging a rim.

The incident happened around 5 a.m. in the Walmart parking lot, according to the report.

Officers reportedly recovered:

  • A Smith & Wesson M&P 15 rifle, two spent Remington .223-caliber rounds, 64 live rounds of Remington .223-caliber ammunition, two PMAG 30-round magazines and one PMAG 40-round magazine;
  • A Mossberg 500 12-gauge shotgun and a 26-inch 12-gauge barrel
  • A black gun case
  • A 2016 Nissan Altima and keys

Jones was arrested and charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. 

According to Richmond County Jail records, Jones had been booked on a $100,000 secured bond, but made bail and was released at 2:40 p.m. Tuesday.

Online records show Jones is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 6.

Aside from several citations from the N.C. State Highway Patrol, records show Jones has no other pending charges nor previous convictions in the state.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
