ROCKINGHAM — After hoping to start back the Plaza Jam summer concert series this month, organizers have canceled Thursday’s show.

City Events Coordinator Kim Williams announced late Thursday morning that the concert in Cole Plaza was being called off due to the projected weather forecast.

The National Weather Service is calling for a 90% chance of showers in the afternoon and an 80% chance in the evening, with thunderstorms possible in the overnight hours.

The concert featuring the Entertainers was to be the first of the 2021 season after government mandates in response to the COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of all shows in 2020 and this year’s first possible show in May.

“We are as disappointed as everyone else,” Williams said.

Several shows in the past have been canceled because of rain.

“We’re looking forward to July 1st and the Embers featuring Craig Woolard,” Williams added.

This year’s schedule mirrors that of 2020 with The Tonez slated to perform in August, followed by the Tams in September, and the North Tower Band closing out the season in October.

The Tams have performed at every Plaza Jam since it started, according to Williams, even playing the day after frontman Little Redd’s birthday one year.

The North Tower Band made its Plaza Jam debut in 2019 and The Entertainers last performed in 2017.

Gary Lowder and Smoking Hot were planned to take the stage in May, but state restrictions on gatherings had not yet been lifted. Lowder is a former member of The Entertainers.
