ROCKINGHAM — A convicted felon is facing drugs and weapons charges following a traffic stop earlier this month.

According to an incident report, 19-year-old Nicholas William Cox was pulled over on U.S. 1 near Spring Street for a traffic violation just after 11 p.m. Jan. 2.

Inside the 2007 Honda Accord, the officer reportedly found and seized a stolen Smith & Wesson .40-caliber handgun, a black magazine with an orange bottom and one live round, as well as 1 gram of a crystal substance, suspected to be methamphetamine.

Cox was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of stolen firearm and possession of a Schedule II controlled substance.

No traffic citations appear on the incident report or online court records.

He was booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $50,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 16.

Cox was released from prison last June after serving 18 months after his probation was revoked on a 2017 conviction of robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault on a handicapped person.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
