ROCKINGHAM — Toni Maples will be on the ballot this November for the Richmond County Board of Commissioners.

The Richmond County Republican Party chose Maples to replace former Ellerbe Mayor Lee Berry, who withdrew from the race July 24, according to party Chairman Jerry Austin.

Berry cited ongoing health problems with his son, Jack, who has Dravet Syndrome, as his reason for dropping out of the race.

Maples will join fellow Republicans Jeff Smart and Andy Grooms and Democrats Michael Legrand, Jimmy Capps and Dewey Brower for three seats on the board.

She is also the only woman running for a seat. Susan Bruce ran in the Democratic primary, but lost to Brower by less than 60 votes.

Capps is the only sitting commissioner in the race.

Commissioners Kenneth Robinette and John Garner, chairman and co-chairman for the past two decades, respectively, did not run.

The RO will have a more detailed story on Maples in the near future.
