ROCKINGHAM — The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile rolled into Richmond County early Thursday afternoon with an assortment of appearances scheduled for the weekend.

Hotdoggers Niki Saseila, aka “Nicoleslaw,” and “At the Grill” Ally parked the iconic vehicle at Discovery Place Kids for children — and kids at heart — to get a glimpse inside the rolling hot dog.

According to its website, the first Wienermobile was built in 1936.

There is currently a fleet of six Wienermobiles, based out of Madison, Wisconsin.

“So we start our journeys there and all six go to different regions,” said Nicoleslaw, adding that this particular Wienermobile travels through the Southeast region.

Each has a 6.0-liter V-8 engine. The vehicles are 24 hot dogs tall, 18 hot dogs wide, and 60 hot dogs long. Other “condiments” include:

  • A hot-dog-shaped dashboard
  • Six mustard and ketchup seats
  • A gull-wing door with retractable step
  • A removable “bun roof”
  • An official Wiener Jingle horn

“You can ketchup with us at different places,” Nicoleslaw said.

The hotdoggers will be at DPK until 4:30 p.m. The Wienermobile will also be at Walmart from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday and Rockingham Speedway from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Visitors can get their photos taken in front of the Wienermobile, as well as cutouts of a hot dog, or mustard and ketchup bottles.

Each visitor gets a free weenie whistle, which the company has been passing out since 1952.
