ROCKINGHAM — Organizers of a motorcycle ride to benefit Richmond County Special Olympics are seeking help from the community.

Local businesses are being asked to donate gift certificates, baskets and merchandise for door prizes or auction items.

There will also be a 50/50 raffle in addition to the door prizes and auction.

This year’s ride is scheduled for May 7 at the Hide-A-Way Tavern on Billy Covington Road, north of Rockingham. Registration begins at noon, with kickstands up at 1 p.m.

The cost for the ride is $20 for singles and $30 for doubles and includes a meal plate. On the menu: barbecue and chicken. Plates will also be available for sale to non-riders.

The ride was started in 2009 by late bar owner Buddy Roebuck and Chris Sachs, who bought the property following Roebuck’s death, carried on the tradition “because the Special Olympics meant a lot to him.”

Sachs had to cancel the ride in 2020 since the bar was closed due to government regulations in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, last year’s event brought in more than $10,000. Nearly a third of that came from sponsorships, according to Sachs.

Earlier this year, another ride brought in $10,000 to help Sachs — who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer — cover the cost of treatment.

Sachs has hosted multiple rides since opening the bar in 2018, raising thousands of dollars for various causes.

In 2021 alone, charity rides at the Hide-A-Way collected more than $25,000. In addition to the Special Olympics benefit, there was the second annual Back the Blue ride, which was co-hosted by Sachs, that raised more than $12,000 to support shop-with-a-cop programs in Richmond and Scotland counties; and one for Project Taylor, which provides toys for children at North Carolina Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill.

To make a donation, call Sachs at 910-995-1690.
