ROCKINGHAM — Several downtown businesses got together for Giving Tuesday to support the Humane Society of Richmond County.

In front of RE/MAX Southern Realty sat a load of dog food, cat food, dog biscuits and other treats, cat litter and a fleece blanket. The businesses also collected $150 in donations.

Giving Tuesday is a “global generosity movement” started in 2012 as “a day that encourages people to do good …unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world,” according to givingtuesday.org.

“Over the past seven years, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity,” the front page of the website reads. “One of the best ways to get involved is in your own community. We’ve created a directory to help you find organizations, events, and ways to give back in your own community.”

Corey Davis with the Humane Society said it was one of the largest one-time donations the organization has ever received.
