Hawkins appointed by Cooper to Recreational Therapy Licensure Board

Dr. Brent Hawkins

ROCKINGHAM — Another Richmond County native was among those appointed to state boards last week.

Dr. Brent Hawkins has been appointed to the North Carolina Recreational Therapy Licensure Board, according to a press release from Gov. Roy Cooper’s office.

Hawkins is an associate professor of recreational therapy at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

The son of Carlton and Terri Hawkins, he is a 2002 graduate of Richmond Senior High School.

According to Hawkins’ LinkedIn page, he graduated from East Carolina University in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in recreational therapy and in 2009 with a Master’s in recreational therapy administration and later earned his doctorate from Clemson University. Hawkins also taught at Clemson prior to going to UNCW.

Hawkins was credentialed as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist from 2007 to 2021 and as a licensed recreational therapist from 2020-2022, and was a distinguished fellow in the National Academy of Recreational Therapists in 2021.

On an ironic note, Hawkins graduated high school with Meghann Lambeth, who was recently appointed to the North Carolina Agriculture Finance Authority and currently teaches at her alma mater.

Hawkins also shares Clemson alumni status with Neil Robinette — appointed to the North Carolina Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing — as the latter went there for the Master’s in real estate development program.
