Heat advisory issued til Sunday evening; thunderstorms possible all week

ROCKINGHAM — It’s going to be a warm weekend, with the National Weather Service warning of rising heat indices.

The NWS issued a heat advisory at noon Saturday, lasting until 9 p.m. Sunday evening for central North Carolina, including Richmond County.

Although actual temperatures are predicted in the mid-90s, forecasters say the heat index is expected to reach 105 degrees and up to 107 degrees in isolated spots.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, the temperature was only 83 degrees, but felt like 93.

Forecasters warn that the high humidity could cause heat-related illness and issued the following recommendations:

  • Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
  • Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
  • Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.
  • To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911.

The area may get some relief from the heat in the form of afternoon thunderstorms.

The extended forecast calls for a chance of showers and thunderstorms every day, through Saturday, July 25.
