Kayaker rescued on Pee Dee River

William R. Toler - Richmond Observer

ELLERBE — A woman in a kayak had to be rescued on the river late Monday evening.

The Ellerbe Rescue Squad was dispatched to help a kayaker in distress on the Pee Dee River at 8:23 p.m., according to Chief Bryan Cloninger.

He said the unnamed woman was unable to make it back to the landing on Grassy Island Road but had managed to grab hold of a buoy and call for help.

Cloninger said she was about a mile south of where she had put in.

Cordova Fire and Rescue and Lilesville Fire and Rescue aided in the attempt, both putting in on the Anson County side, Cloninger said.

Ellerbe Rescue put in at the same place as the victim and was able to reach her and tow her back to where she was parked.
