ROCKINGHAM — A thin layer of smoke is currently blanketing parts of Richmond County.
The cause: a controlled burn.
County Ranger Jack Franklin, with the N.C. Forest Service, said Wednesday that the smoke seen in Rockingham is coming from a controlled burn in Scotland by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.
Although winds are low and humidity is higher than it was several weeks ago, dry conditions still make the area ripe for wildfires.

Richmond County is among the most fire-prone in the state, according to Franklin.
This past weekend, rangers tackled two fires off county home road that burned a combined 40 acres.
