The late U.S. Rep. Walter Jones, a N.C. Republican, ended his speeches on the House floor about the pitfalls of Afghanistan by asking God’s blessing and protection for our service members. After 20 years in the war-torn country, U.S involvement in Afghanistan ends just as Jones predicted. Yet, one wonders if even he could have foreseen such a botched and embarrassing withdrawal.

Buried in Northeastern Cemetery in Rocky Mount, North Carolina is George Foxe (1940-1965). Foxe served in the 7th Calvary in Vietnam; the infamous unit previously commanded by Gen. George Armstrong Custer. If you’ve read the book “We Were Soldiers Once . . . and Young” or seen the Hollywood film, you know a little bit about the ordeal Foxe experienced.

ROCKINGHAM — After 90 years of sitting in downtown’s Harrington Square, a monument to soldiers of the Confederacy will be coming down.

PEMBROKE — Civil war author Kevin M. Levin will hold a lecture and book signing at UNC Pembroke’s Thomas Entrepreneurship Hub on Oct. 29.
