ROCKINGHAM – Fact: A typical school bus has 13 rows, 26 bench seats, and can accommodate anywhere between 52 and 76 passengers at a time, depending on their age.  Richmond County has dozens of these such buses which are utilized by the district’s 15 schools to serve its more than 7,000 children.

On August 9th Richmond County Schools will utilize one of these iconic vessels of transportation for an entirely different purpose as they work to fill all 26 seats with school supplies at their 10th annual Stuff the event.

“All students look forward to the first day of school with new school supplies, but it’s a different story for those families who can’t afford these items for their children,” explains Michelle Parrish, Executive Director of United Way of Richmond County.  “United Way believes that the inability to afford school supplies shouldn’t be an obstacle to a child’s success and that’s why we partner with RCS and Wal-Mart to facilitate “Stuff the Bus.”

2018’s Stuff the Bus campaign is set to take place on Thursday, August 9th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Walmart in Rockingham.  Students from Richmond Senior High School’s Beta Club will be stationed outside of each set of doors, prepared to accept school supplies and monetary donations from donors.

We accept and purchase a variety of things such as backpacks, pencils, folders, and notebooks, even down to hand sanitizer for classrooms and Ziploc bags,” shared Briana Goins, public information officer for Richmond County Schools. “This is a great event because it helps students who may not otherwise have supplies throughout the school year.”

Contrary to past years, no supplies will be given out to students during the drive itself.  Instead, all of the collected supplies will be brought back to the RCS Central Office where they will be counted, sorted, and distributed to each school.

Although the big event isn’t set to happen until late next week, an entire financial aspect of the campaign has been underway for several weeks.  In an effort to collect even more school supplies than those donated by generous locals, RCS and its partners conduct extensive networking to encourage area businesses and organizations to sign on as event sponsors.  These businesses will each be recognized on the event t-shirt and corresponding sponsorship banners.

“Every donation counts,” added Goins, “even if it’s a few pencils or a pack of paper. Our last campaign received over 32,000 items and we would love to receive even more if possible.”
