SANFORD — A full seven innings wasn’t enough to decide a winner during the Richmond Renegades junior varsity baseball game on Tuesday.

Kickstarting a three-game week, the JV Renegades tied Southern Lee 3-3. The game was called following the seventh due to the time limit.

“It wasn’t our best game tonight,” head coach Ryan Mercer commented. “I felt like we weren’t locked in mentally.

“Any time you leave as many baserunners on as we did tonight, it’s tough to win,” he added. “We have to try and bounce back tomorrow.”

The JV Renegades stranded a total of 10 base runners in the contest, including leaving the bases loaded twice.

Evan Hodges got the start on the mound for Richmond and threw 4.0 innings. He allowed three runs on four hits and struck out eight batters.

Sam Thompson tossed three scoreless innings and allowed just one hit in relief. He added five strikeouts to his line.

Richmond broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning, using a two-out RBI double by Camron Quick to left field. Scoring from second base was Hayden Wheeler, who led off with a hit-by-pitch.

Southern Lee knotted the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third and took a 3-1 lead with two more runs in the home half of the fourth.

Erasing the two-run deficit in the fifth, the JV Renegades scored their final two runs. Tyler McKenzie recorded an RBI on a groundout back to the pitcher, plating Jabari Douglas (walk).

Tying the game was Jason Gainey (single), who scored from third when an errant pickoff attempt to first sailed wide. Richmond had the go-ahead run at second, but couldn’t score.

The JV Renegades totaled nine hits as a team, with a team-high two coming from Gainey.

Quick and Caden Nolan both had a double, and Thompson, Brooks Calhoun, Connor Phifer, Jake Richardson and Jackson Webster added a single.

The JV Renegades (2-1-1) will look to return to the win column with a home game against Lee County on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
