RALEIGH — Hemp growers and retailers in North Carolina may be helped by a provision in a Senate bill that was discussed in Senate’s Agriculture, Energy, and Environment Senate Standing Committee meeting Tuesday.

RALEIGH — The N.C. General Assembly began the first full week of work on Monday with a slate of committee meetings and eighteen bills already filed. The legislature has fast-track plans to “pre-negotiate” the budget and be out by July 1. Still, important issues are on the to-do list, like health care access reports and parental involvement in education.

Charlotte-based Atrium Health announced Wednesday that they are merging with Midwest-based Advocate Aurora Health. The combined health systems, which will be headquartered in Charlotte, will be known as Advocate Health, although both entities will keep their current names in their local markets. Advocate Aurora has a dual headquarters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Downers Grove, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. They will continue to maintain a presence in those areas.

RALEIGH — Gov. Roy Cooper wants to increase the state budget for the 2022-23 fiscal year from $27 billion to $29.3 billion, an increase of 8.5%. The money would come from $6.2 billion in additional revenue spelled out in the state’s latest forecast.

CNN has pulled the plug on its streaming service, CNN+, less than a month after it launched. It is scheduled to shut down on April 30. Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s new parent company, made the decision.

RALEIGH — North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper is among the top 10 Democrats named in The Washington Post’s quarterly Democratic presidential candidate ranking for 2024 released on April 16. Cooper came in at 6th place, down from 5th in its last ranking. The paper calls him "one leading contender you hear the least about” and says he is a “Biden-style candidate who checks lots of boxes.”

GREENSBORO — President Joe Biden said he is “building back a better America than before the pandemic, with a better way with better pay, and greater dignity for working people.” This during a speech at N.C. A&T University Thursday afternoon in Greensboro. However, recent poll numbers indicate that most people in the state aren’t buying it.

RALEIGH — Farmers across the country, including North Carolina, are “taking it on the chin” when it comes to diesel and fertilizer prices, which have risen to unprecedented levels. The U.S. is dependent on and a major importer of foreign fertilizer. Factors driving costs up include Russia’s war with Ukraine, a limited supply of the relevant minerals and high energy costs, high global demand and agricultural commodity prices, reliance on fertilizer imports, and lack of competition in the fertilizer industry.
