10th COVID-related death announced for Richmond County

ROCKINGHAM — The COVID-related death toll has now risen to double digits.

The Richmond County Health Department announced the county’s 10th death attributed to the coronavirus around 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

According to Health and Human Services Director Dr. Tommy Jarrell, the patient died earlier in the day at a local hospital.

“Please join us with your thoughts and prayers for this family today during this time of their loss,” Jarrell said in a statement.

According to Jarrell, the 10 individuals whose deaths have been attributed to COVID-19 are between the ages of 31 and 95.

This is the second death reported this month, with the most recent before Thursday being reported Aug. 3. was reported on July 21.

 

The county’s first death attributed to COVID-19 was reported on April 10; the second was on April 17; the third on May 30;  the fourth on June 8; the fifth on June 11; the sixth on June 29; the seventh on June 30; and the eighth on July 21.

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services reported on Wednesday that there have been 2,606 deaths attributed to the coronavirus statewide. There have been 179,756 COVID-related deaths across the U.S. and 826,591 across the world, according to Johns Hopkins University.

On Wednesday, the Health Department reported 13 new cases, bringing the county’s total to 652. Of those 530 have recovered.

There were 113 active cases, with 105 under home isolation and eight hospitalized. The number of hospitalizations had dropped from 13 on Tuesday and 12 on Monday — each day setting a record high for the county.

Health officials encourage residents to follow the three Ws: wear a mask; wait six feet apart; and wash hands frequently.

Thursdays statistics have not yet been released.
