ROCKINGHAM –  On Friday, May 4th, hundreds of participants will join together at the annual Relay For Life of Richmond County at The Cole Auditorium to help the American Cancer Society attack cancer from every angle.

The event starts at 6 P.M.

“I feel very honored to be working with the community to bring Relay For Life together in Richmond County.  Everyone has been working so hard to make this event special.  I’m looking forward to May 4th and to see the outpouring of support from everyone in Richmond County who has had a personal experience with cancer,” said Stephanie Thornton, volunteer event leader.

The American Cancer Society is the cause fighting cancer on every front; standing shoulder to shoulder with cancer patients and those supporting them. Funds raised help the American Cancer Society attack cancer in dozens of ways, each of them critical to achieving a world without cancer – from developing breakthrough therapies to building supportive communities, from providing empowering resources to deploying activists to raise awareness.

Local cancer survivor Linda Lovin understands first-hand how vital these services are.  “Relay For Life means so much to me to know that there are other survivors out there and we all can come together for that one night and talk, comfort, laugh, sing and just hang out and have fun for that one day and not have to think about what the next minute, hour or day will bring,” said Lovin.

This year’s event features local entertainment groups, tons of food and games from teams and businesses across the county.  “We currently have almost 30 teams registered which include businesses, schools, churches as well as friends and family groups,” said Cameron Whitley, Senior Community Manager for the American Cancer Society.  The event begins at 6 PM with opening ceremonies followed by the well known survivor lap, and will continue on until midnight.

Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Washington in 1985, the Relay For Life movement unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have been touched by cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action for lifesaving change. Symbolizing the battle waged around the clock by those facing cancer, the event can last up to 24 hours and empowers communities to take a stand against cancer.
