ELLERBE — Those wanting to participate in the annual Farmers Day Parade have less than a month left to sign up.

This will be the 27th year for the event — part of the county’s celebration of Farm-City Week — in the farming community of Ellerbe.

The parade, a collaboration between the USDA-Farm Service Agency and the town of Ellerbe, often features a variety of classic and modern tractors rolling down Main Street about a week before Thanksgiving.

Classic cars, community organizations and local politicians are also parade staples.

This year’s grand marshal will be 99-year-old Bill Brookshire, a World War II veteran and former farmer.

According to Kelsey Lovin, who works for the FSA and is a member of the parade committee, Brookshire was a B-17 tailgunner during the war.

Throughout his life, Brookshire grew tobacco, corn and grain in the area, “but mainly worked in the timber industry, another branch of agriculture,” Lovin said.

After the parade, several tractors will be on display in the field behind Food King and multiple vendors will be set up behind Town Hall.

The deadline to register for the parade is Nov. 17.

Contact committee members Tami Thomas, Jamie Lambeth or Kelsey Lovin at 910-895-3950 Ext. 2; Willa Spivey at 910-997-5551; or Jamie English at 910-652-6251.

Food vendors should contact the Richmond County Health Department of Cooperative Extension office to complete applications, and all vendors should contact English to complete entry forms.

The parade is scheduled for 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 18.
