Our leading lady today is a stranger to almost none. Between veteran affairs and programs, events in downtown Rockingham or with the Richmond County Chamber of Commerce, a multitude of community initiatives and projects, and leading operations at Hudson Brothers Deli, Robin Gainey Roberts is well-known by most. 

Frank Buckles, who passed away in 2011, was the last surviving American veteran of World War I. An ambulance driver on the Western front, Buckles lied about his age and enlisted at 16. His parents were born before the Civil War, and his mom delivered her last child, Frank, in her 40s.

In 1954, Congress passed, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed, a bill transforming Armistice Day — Nov. 11, a post-World-War I celebration of peace — into Veterans Day,  a celebration of warriors.

ROCKINGHAM — There are several events scheduled across Richmond County in the coming days to honor local veterans.

ASHEBORO — In honor of Veterans Day, the North Carolina Zoo is offering free admission for the military and $2 off admission for up to six accompanying guests for its Military Appreciation Week of Nov. 8–14, 2021.

SOUTHERN PINES — A Richmond County resident was one of veterans honored by the Sandhills Quilting Guild on Veterans Day.

CHARLOTTE — This Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2020, the American Red Cross honors and remembers veterans during this unprecedented time in our nation’s history. The Red Cross is proud to acknowledge U.S. veterans who are choosing, once again, to serve on the front lines. Today, U.S. veterans are standing up with the Red Cross to stop the spread of the coronavirus affecting military and veteran communities across the globe.

HAMLET — Veterans who are residents of two local nursing homes were recognized by one of Richmond County’s veterans organizations Monday afternoon.

DOBBINS HEIGHTS — Ball caps designating different branches of the military dotted the crowd for Monday’s Veterans Day Service at the Dobbins Heights Community Center.

ROCKINGHAM —There will be a variety of events going on throughout the day and into the evening hours Saturday to honor and remember veterans.

Things kick off at 11 a.m. with a Veterans Day service, presented by American Legion Post 147, at Veterans Memorial Park, across from Rockingham VFW Post 4203.
