ROCKINGHAM — Young visitors to Discovery Place Kids will get hands-on engineering experience this month as the museum centers activities on the theme “Maker Madness.”
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, kids will be able to design circuits using play-dough, a conductor, as they explore electricity and conductivity.
The lab activity for Wednesdays and Fridays will mix science and art using salt and water colors to learn about absorption.
Those who come on the weekends will have the opportunity to build a catapult, a simple machine that has been around for centuries, to hurl different objects around the room.
Lab activities are at 11:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 2:15 p.m. only on Sundays.
There will also be daily science shows in the lab where visitors can “predict, observe and experiment with different interesting topics” weekdays at 9:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m., and weekends at 9:45 a.m. and 3:45 p.m.
On St. Patrick’s Day, the museum will celebrate the luck of the Irish creating “blarney crafts” in the studio.
Over at the Sandhills Stage, children can sit down for story time at 1:45 p.m. daily or get up and “boogie and shake” and sing along to songs “that will get you up and moving” at 11:45 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. on weekdays or 4:45 p.m. on weekends.
This month’s puppet show is “Pangea’s Got Talent,” where “little spectators will observe different types of dinosaurs in an entertaining and educational talent show.”
Discovery Place Kids is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday-Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday; and noon-5 p.m. on Sunday.
