RALEIGH — A Robeson County man is being sued by N.C. State Attorney General Josh Stein for allegedly running a “sham” timber company and ripping off Ellerbe land owners.

RALEIGH — The N.C. Supreme Court has ruled, 4-2, that 220,000 state government retirees had a contractual right to premium-free health care benefits that had been promised to them. Now a trial court will have to determine whether state changes to those benefits a decade ago violated the contract.

RALEIGH — On Jan. 19, 2022, the North Carolina Court of Appeals granted a request from two insurance providers to voluntarily dismiss appeals of their suit over contracts awarded for NC Medicaid Managed Care by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

RALEIGH — The N.C. Court of Appeals will decide in the weeks or months ahead whether students from N.C. State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill can sue their schools for refunds of student fees.

WASHINGTON  —The U.S. Department of Agriculture is updating the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program 2 for contract producers of eligible livestock and poultry and producers of specialty crops and other sales-based commodities. CFAP 2, which assists producers who faced market disruptions in 2020 due to COVID-19, is part of USDA’s broader Pandemic Assistance for Producers initiative. Additionally, USDA’s Farm Service Agency has set an Oct. 12 deadline for all eligible producers to apply for or modify applications for CFAP 2. 

RALEIGH — The N.C. Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission voted unanimously last week to recommend the state award a 10-year contract for warehouse services to LB&B Associates, the target of an audit in 2018 that has over the previous years cost the state about $13.5 million.

RALEIGH — A court has rejected an attempt by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction and Istation for it to intervene in a dispute over a K-3 reading tool contract.

RALEIGH — At the nation’s largest employer of the blind, only a skeletal crew of workers remains.

After IFB Solutions lost its Veterans Affairs contracts, the nonprofit lost 99 jobs, and the layoffs aren’t over in its optical lab in Winston-Salem. In total, some 137 employees, including 76 blind people and 15 veterans, will face unemployment.
