MONCURE — A Vietnamese automaker has announced plans to build a $4 billion electric-vehicle assembly and battery-manufacturing plant at Triangle Innovation Point in Moncure, about 30 miles west of the Triangle. To attract the newly formed company, the state and Chatham County promise to spend nearly $1.2 billion in incentives over the next 32 years. Meantime, VinFast is working to secure $1 billion in investment money to build the plant.

N.C.’s Apple deal named worst of 2021

RALEIGH — The $846 million subsidy deal that North Carolina struck with Apple just topped the “year’s worst” list of a nonpartisan economic think tank. The Center for Economic Accountability selected the 39-year agreement to put Apple’s campus in Research Triangle Park as the “Worst Economic Development Deal of the Year,” saying that its annual $21 million cost to the state led the list of reasons.

Rockingham, Hamlet, RCC offering vaccine incentives

ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County’s two largest municipalities and the community college are offering financial incentives to employees to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

RALEIGH — This week Apple Inc. announced North Carolina will be the new home to a billion-dollar campus working in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and software engineering. The move will create 3,000 jobs that pay an average of $187,000 annually.

OPINION: A transformative day

Yesterday was a big one in North Carolina. We awoke to news that Apple is going to build a new campus in Wake County and then, in the afternoon, we learned, as expected, the state will get an additional Congressional seat. We increased our reputation as an economic and political powerhouse. Not only are the world’s top companies locating here, we now hold 16 electoral votes. Only seven states hold more.
