OPINION: A transformative day

Yesterday was a big one in North Carolina. We awoke to news that Apple is going to build a new campus in Wake County and then, in the afternoon, we learned, as expected, the state will get an additional Congressional seat. We increased our reputation as an economic and political powerhouse. Not only are the world’s top companies locating here, we now hold 16 electoral votes. Only seven states hold more.

RALEIGH — North Carolina has grown large enough over the last decade to earn a 14th congressional seat, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today in a news release. That seat will be contested during next year’s 2022 congressional elections.

OP-ED: Census too costly to ignore

To say that our state, our nation, and our world have changed dramatically in the past few months would be an understatement. At the NC Rural Center and the NC Counts Coalition, we know how much our work and the communities we serve have changed — and will change — because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
