ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County has an active weekend schedule ahead with several planned fundraisers.

The J.C. and Ruth P. Watkins (formerly Leak Street) Cultural Center will host the county’s second annual Juneteenth Celebration from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday.

Juneteenth, federally recognized on June 19, memorializes the day in 1865 when a Union general delivered the news of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas — nearly three years after being announced by President Abraham Lincoln — and demanded that slaves be set free.

This year’s celebration will include entertainment, bounce houses, a DJ, food and craft vendors and a cooking demonstration. The “Hidden in Plain Sight” trailer, which is a model of a bedroom to show parents where kids might hide drugs, will also be there.

Outreach for Jesus will be hosting a car show and bike ride at the church on the corner of Airport and Battley Dairy roads just west of Hamlet.

This is the fourth year for the event, with proceeds going toward the church’s youth outreach.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with kickstands going up for the ride at 10 a.m. The cost is $10 for the ride and $15 for the car show. There will also be barbecue sandwich and hot dog plates for sale.

For more information, contact Elder Joe Ingram at 910-206-0669 or Pam Smith at 910-506-9749.

The fourth annual Special Forces Wounded Warriors Ride will leave from the Hide-A-Way Tavern at 1 p.m.

The event is a fundraiser for the Silvertip Hunt Club to give back to veterans.

Each year, the club takes four veterans picked by the Special Forces Association, on a weekend hunting trip in the Norman area off of Capel Mill Road.

The veterans are also given Yeti coolers full of hunting-related gifts and, if there are enough funds, each a firearm.

Last year’s ride raised $4,7000. Click here to read that story.

Registration begins at noon, and the ride will begin and end at the Hide-A-Way.

For more information, contact Kevin Porter at 910-995-1938, Mark Porter at 910-995-6453, or Joey Bostick at 910-417-9537.

Trey McKenzie and Trip Stewart, who wrestle as the tag-team New Breed, will defend their belts Saturday in a wrestling show benefiting Richmond County Crime Stoppers.

Later in the day, regional wrestlers will face off inside squared circle for “Bodyslamming Crime,” benefitting Richmond County Crime Stoppers.

The event is being put on by Indy Brothers United, a collaboration of regional promotions World Class Extreme Wrestling, Atlantic Coast Professional Wrestling and Wrestling with a Purpose.

The card features six matches — including four title matches — and a battle royal. Rockingham based tag-team New Breed (Trip Stewart and Trey McKenzie) will be defending their WECW belts.

Last week, R.C. Crime Stoppers raised nearly $3,000 in a fundraiser held in conjunction with Hamlet’s Food Truck Friday.

Crime Stoppers, which is funded through both public and private donations, works with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and Hamlet and Rockingham police departments to provide monetary awards for tips leading to arrests and convictions of criminals.

MB Drift and Stock Car Classics also return to Rockingham Speedway this weekend. Check back with the RO later for more on that.

VFW Post 4203 will also host Kids Jam 2023 on Saturday from noon-4 p.m. with multiple activities for children.
