FAYETTEVILLE — With the regular season down to its final two games for the Richmond Senior High School boys’ junior varsity and freshman basketball teams, neither one wasted an opportunity to put another win on the board Tuesday.

Both teams travelled to Seventy-First High School and picked up big road wins.

JV Raiders end skid with rout over Falcons

Entering the game, head coach Tony Terry’s team was on a two-game skid, having lost to Hoke County and Lumberton high schools following a season-high six-game winning streak. But the Raiders returned to the win column with a 55-29 victory over Seventy-First.

It was freshman De Shon Watson who had the most points for Richmond, scoring a team-high 13 points in the win. All of his points came in the second half, and impressed with 12 of them in the fourth quarter. Watson drained three three-pointers in the final eight minutes and added a field goal and a free throw.

Up 24-11 at the half, the JV Raiders used seven points from sophomore Dalton Stroman and five points from fellow 10th grader Jakolbe Baldwin in the first half to jump out to a big lead. Freshman Jalen David also scored all five of his points in the first quarter.

Watson’s scoring barrage in the fourth quarter made it a wash, with Richmond improving to 9-9 overall and 8-5 in Sandhills Athletic Conference play.

Stroman and Baldwin nearly finished with double-doubles, combining for 17 points and 15 boards. Stroman netted nine points and grabbed eight rebounds, with Baldwin tacking on eight points and seven boards.

Sophomore Isaiah Jones contributed eight points, while Dayon Bright and Dylan Lewis added six apiece. The JV Raiders will wrap up their season at home Friday when they take on rival Scotland High School.

Freshmen Raiders earn third-straight win

The Ninth Grade Academy team was on the opposite end of the JV team, entering Tuesday’s game against the Falcons on a two-game winning streak. The freshman Raiders kept it going with an exciting 46-43 road win.

“We battled foul trouble all night, and had three starters in foul trouble from the first quarter on,” head coach Taivon Jones said. “Jaiden Covington had a monster game on the glass with 19 rebounds. Javares Stanback had the game-high in points off the bench — he really changed the tempo of the game when he got on the court.”

Stanback led all scorers with 16 points, having an explosive third quarter, scoring 11 points. Covington added nine points to his 19 rebounds.

Jones’ team lead 20-18 at the half and used a steal by Xavier Collazo in the fourth quarter to force the Falcons to foul. He connected on one of his two attempts in the period, and teammate KeSean Ingram splashed home two jumpers to seal the victory. He finished with 10 points.

The freshmen Raiders improved to 10-3 on the season, and will look to close things out with a win in the regular season finale Friday at Scotland.
