HAMLET — Police have charged a Richmond County man for allegedly having sex with a minor.

Zayvion Rafayette Covington, 23, is accused of engaging in intercourse with a female under the age of 15.

According to the arrest warrant, issued Oct. 15 to an officer with the Hamlet Police Department, the alleged incidents occurred on July 1.

Covington was arrested Oct. 16 and charged with three felony counts of statutory rape of a child 15 years old or younger.

He is being held without bond in the Richmond County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 30.

Online court records show Covington was issued a citation on Sept. 10 for driving while license revoked.

Covington appears to have no other pending charges or prior convictions in North Carolina.

However, court records show Covington has previously failed to appear in court on several traffic citations. Those citations were dismissed with leave, which means they could be refiled at a later date.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
