HAMLET — A woman is facing misdemeanor and felony charges after allegedly stealing from gas stations.
One warrant, issued to the Hamlet Police Department on June 28, alleges that 55-year-old Stephanie Elaine Smith, of “the streets of Hamlet,” stole a 12-pack of Sunkist Orange and a 12-pack of Pepsi from the Refuel store the previous day, June 27.
Because she had several prior convictions, police charged Smith with a felony count of habitual larceny.
Online court records show Smith was convicted of misdemeanor larceny in May 2024 (pleading down from habitual larceny), as well as December and November of 2023. The warrant lists another conviction in April of 2022.
Police obtained another warrant June 29, charging Smith with misdemeanor larceny for allegedly stealing a 12-pack of Corona beer and a 12-pack of Pepsi — valued at $33 — from the Speedway gas station that day.
Records show Smith was arrested July 11 on both warrants.
Records with the Richmond County Jail show Smith also has another pending charge of misdemeanor larceny, as well as a charge of second-degree trespassing and two counts of assault and battery. However, the RO could not find any court records related to those charges.
Jail records show Smith is being held on a combined $6,000 secured bond. Available court records show Smith had her first appearance July 13 and her next court date is scheduled for July 30.
Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Smith’s parole ended May 4, following a 2024 conviction of larceny from the person. During her supervision time, Smith was incarcerated three times — once following the initial conviction and twice on three-month reimprison violations.
Smith also has the following prior convictions:
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
