GREENSBORO — Pairs of touchdowns from two players helped Richmond Senior’s junior varsity football team pick up a 39-7 road win against Northwest Guilford on Thursday.
According to coach Patrick Hope, freshman running back Ayden Conaway put Richmond Senior on the board first, running 65 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.
Following a defense stop of the Vikings, sophomore T.J. Watkins brought the score to 12-0 with a 21-yard run on the Raiders’ second drive, Hope said.
In the second quarter, Hope said Northwest Guilford completed a one-yard touchdown pass, taking the game to halftime with a score of 12-7.
Richmond continued its dominating streak in the second half with scores on four defensive drives, Hope said — starting with a seven-yard rushing touchdown from Tyri Wormley, followed by a 91-yard run by Christian Smith.
Both extra-point kicks from Kenan Cottle sailed through the uprights to put the Raiders up by 19, Hope said.
Conaway and Watkins both scored two more touchdowns, with a third PAT from Cottle, to seal the victory for the Raiders in their first away game, according to the coach.
"The team was ready to show that we are much improved from our last outing against Scotland," Hope said, referring to the 10-7 loss in the first game on Aug. 26. "We really did a great job taking care of the football. We didn't have a turnover the entire night."
Hope said the game also saw “solid performances” from Kharic Dimery, Cassidy Robinson, Dalton Chavis, Mauricio Harris, Kobe Rush, Maurice Lemon and Jamarrion Nicholson.
"The offensive line played very well, paving the way for six rushing touchdowns, over 400 yards rushing, and no sacks allowed," Hope said. "We wanted to use this game as a spark not only for the JV team, but for the entire football program to get us back to our winning ways."
The JV Squad, now 1-1, is scheduled to host West Forsyth on Sept. 17 before traveling to Hoggard for a make-up game on Sept. 21. Both games will start at 6:30 p.m.
