ROCKINGHAM — Investigators have filed several felony charges against a man accused in a July 4 break-in.
An arrest warrant issued to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office alleges that 20-year-old Fernando Ruiz Castro broke into a home and storage building on Park Street in East Rockingham.
Castro allegedly stole a weedeater, two drills, two nailguns and a circular sander from the building, as well as having stolen cash.
The warrant names 19-year-old Jordan Calvo-Bernal as a co-conspirator. While the RO could not find Bernal’s warrant for conspiracy in online court records, the charge is listed in records with the Richmond County Jail.
Castro was arrested the same day and charged with one felony count each of: breaking and entering; larceny after breaking and entering; second-degree burglary; conspiracy; and possession of or receiving stolen property.
Records show Castro is being held on a $10,000 secured bond and had his first court appearance on July 6. His next court date is scheduled for July 13.
Jail records show Castro is also being held on an additional $2,500 secured bond on traffic citations from Columbus County. However, the RO could not find related court records.
In addition to conspiracy, Bernal is also charged with possession of or receiving stolen property.
Records show Bernal was served with an outstanding warrant related to a reported assault on June 2.
That warrant, taken out by the reported victim, alleges that Bernal threatened to kill a pregnant woman and her unborn child. Bernal is accused of pulling a knife on the woman, as well as punching her in the head and breaking her jaw, kicking and choking her, and sitting on her belly. He also allegedly tried to grab the phone from her as she was calling 911.
In that case, Bernal is charged with one misdemeanor count each of: assault on a pregnant woman; battery of an unborn child; assault inflicting serious injury; crime of domestic violence; assault with a deadly weapon; communicating threats; and interfering with emergency communication.
Bernal is being held on a combined $12,500 secured bond. His next court appearance on those charges is scheduled for July 27.
Neither appear to have any prior convictions in the state.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
