Moore County man accused of chasing other drivers, stealing from box truck

ELLERBE — A Moore County man is facing criminal charges and traffic infractions for alleged incidents in two counties.

According to a citation issued by the N.C. State Highway Patrol, 57-year-old Curtis Dean Campbell, who has addresses listed in Pinehurst and Carthage, chased an “innocent person” and ran them off the road before leaving the scene.

The incident reportedly happened Saturday, March 28 on State Road 1103, which goes by Sand Pit Road and N. Ridgecrest Street, in the Pinebluff area.

The citation notes that Campbell “went to Richmond County, tried to do it again to another person…”

Warrants taken out by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office show that Cambell broke into a box truck owned by Lee Berry and stole vegetables, fruit, birdhouses, gas containers, wire, metal, plastic totes, a battery charger, fruit baskets, a handtruck, cornhole boards, a fan, wire racks “and other assorted items.” The property was valued at $3,500.

Deputies reportedly tried to stop Campbell for careless and reckless driving while “chasing a female.” Campbell was allegedly driving 80 mph down Green Lake Road in a 55 mph zone.

The Highway Patrol citation notes that Campbell “crashed out” with “a huge amount of stolen property found.”

Campbell was taken into custody and charged with: breaking and entering a motor vehicle; felony larceny; fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle; reckless driving with wanton disregard; speeding; and failing to heed a red light or siren. He was also cited for failing to maintain lane control.

Troopers also cited Campbell for charges of reckless driving to endanger, hit and run leaving the scene with property damage, and failure to report an accident in connection to the Moore County incident.

Campbell is being held in the Richmond County Jail on a combined $25,000 secured bond and had his first appearance in court on March 30. His next court date is April 2 for the Richmond County Charges is April 2, June 12 for the Moore County charges.

Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Campbell has the following prior convictions:

1987 - receiving stolen goods (Cumberland)

1988 - misdemeanor larceny (Cumberland)

1989 - two counts of felony larceny (New Hanover)

1990 - two counts of misdemeanor larceny (Cumberland)

2004 - assault on a female (New Hanover)

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
