ROCKINGHAM — Local first responders are gearing up for an event to kick off the upcoming school year.
The Richmond County Chiefs Association and Richmond County Sheriff’s Office are joining forces to host the third annual Back to School Bash and Touch a Truck event.
The event — scheduled for 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8 at the Richmond County Airport — will be held in conjunction with National Night Out.
Vehicles from multiple fire and law enforcement departments, as well as other agencies and businesses, will be on display.
There will be bounce houses, a dunking booth and a gaming trailer on site and they will be giving away at least 300 backpacks filled with school supplies. Last year, 200 backpacks were handed out.
Organizers will be cooking 400 free hot dogs, and Duna’s Iceway will be giving away free ice cream to the first 200 visitors. Puckered Up Lemonade will also be at the event.
This year, the event will also include a performance by 2022 American Idol contestant Matthew Sexton. Organizers encourage attendees to bring their own lawn chairs for the concert.
Amazon is a main sponsor for the event.
Anyone wishing to donate school supplies can drop them off at the following locations:
