ROCKINGHAM — The roundabouts south of town could still be in the dark until mid-to-late August.
The traffic circles near Exit 311 at the intersection of U.S. 1 and U.S. 74 Bypass opened in mid-April, but drivers have complained about the lack of light at night.
“The project team is currently in the process of securing power for the lighting at the roundabout,” Jordan Campos, public information officer for Division 8 of the N.C. Department of Transportation, told the RO in a June 23 email.
“Duke Energy is installing a transformer and running the power cable to the control panel,” Campos added. “They have provided an estimated lead time of six to eight weeks for this work.”
She clarified that the timeframe was based on an on-site meeting with Duke on June 19.
Once Duke’s portion of the project is complete, Campos said, NCDOT “will be able to proceed with activating the lights.”
