OBITUARY: Carl Randolph Smith

Carl “Randy” Randolph Smith, 73, of Hamlet, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Richmond County on June 22, 1953 to the late Charlie Dorsey Smith and Margaret Brigman Smith.

A lifelong Richmond Raiders football fan, Randy lived life with passion, creativity, and a wonderful sense of humor. He was a talented musician who could play several instruments and had a gift for songwriting, bringing music and joy to those around him.

A skilled carpenter, he took pride in working with his hands. He was also a well-known auctioneer, who owned his own auction company. 

Above all, he was a loving father whose family meant the world to him. His playful spirit and love of a good prank brought laughter to countless moments and created memories that will be cherished forever.

He will be remembered for his many talents, his humor, and the love he shared with his family and friends. His presence will be deeply missed, but his music, laughter, and memories will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Along with his parents, Randy was preceded in death by his infant sister, Sue Ellen Smith; and sister, Elaine Gathings.

Left to cherish his memory, daughter, Angela Smith of Rockingham; sons, Chuck Smith of Rockingham, Lonnie Smith, also of Rockingham, Daniel Smith of Hamlet, and Bobby Smith (Whitney) of Greensboro; seven grandchildren with one soon to arrive; brothers, Charles Smith Jr. of Hamlet and Doug Brown (Rachel) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; sisters, Frances Sanders of Tatum, South Carolina, Mavis Shortt of Rockingham, and Norma Jean Scott of Hamlet; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Peanut.

A visitation will be held on Monday, Aug. 17, 2026, from 2-3 p.m., at Outreach For Jesus, in Hamlet.  A memorial service will immediately follow the visitation at 3 p.m., with Pastor Marvin Taylor, Pastor Travis Wilkerson and Pastor Jimmy Smith officiating.

At other times, the family will be receiving friends at the home of his sister, Norma Jean, in Hamlet. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Richmond County Hospice, 1119 N. U.S. Hwy 1, Rockingham, NC 28379.
