Dorothy Phyllis Smith Hendrick, 83, of Oak Island, formerly of Hamlet, passed away peacefully on Friday, Aug. 28, 2026 at the homeplace of her family in Hamlet.
She was born Sept. 25, 1942, in Baltimore, Maryland, daughter of the late Melvin Sanford Smith Sr. and Mary Louise Sands Smith.
Phyllis worked several years in the banking industry as a teller. She was an avid baker, loved sewing and making quilts, and loved to travel. One of her favorite places was Mexico.
Phyllis was, at times, outspoken and always determined. She was dearly loved by her family and will be missed.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Larry John Hendrick; beloved daughter, Victoria Lynn Brown; great-granddaughter, Naomi Brown; and brother, Melvin Sanford Smith Jr.
Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Davis Way (Randall) of Belville; stepdaughters, Cindy Blue of Oak Island and Jennifer Blake of Rockingham; grandchildren, Allison Vance, Christopher Hodges, Miranda Blue, Marissa Babson (Bradley) and Caleb Blake; four great-grandchildren; brother, Ronnie W. Smith (Glenda) of Nokesville, Virginia; sisters, Shirley Lassiter and Cathy Kirkley, both of Hamlet; and special friend, Cindy Melton.
A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2026 at 11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Hamlet, with the Rev. Larry Frye, the Rev. Bill Monroe and Pastor Walter Taylor, her pastor at Oak Island Presbyterian Church, officiating.
