Helen Creech Scholl, 79, of West End, formerly of Hamlet, passed away Monday, Aug. 31, 2026 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital-Richmond.

She was born March 21, 1947, in Marlboro County, South Carolina, daughter of the late James Randolph Creech and Eva Quick Creech.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Robert Scholl.

Left to cherish Helen's memory are her daughters, Amy Scholl Butler (Scott) of Rockingham and Kay Scholl Smith (Jeff) of Hamlet; grandchildren, Garrett Butler (Savanna Greene), Katie Lee (Jonathan), Justin Smith, and Kassie Smith (Jacob Jones); great-grandson, Wade Lee; brother, David Creech, and sisters, Christine Paul (Cecil) and Betty Roller (Clyde Locklear), all of Hamlet.

Helen lived most of her life in the Ghio community of Hamlet, where she learned the value of hard work. She was a graduate of UNC Pembroke and King’s College and made a career in education with Richmond County Schools.

Helen had a gift for caring for others. She catered countless weddings and was well known for her famous pound cakes, which she shared with friends and neighbors. After retiring, she volunteered alongside her sisters at the Sandhills Coalition (aka, “The Big C”). She loved tending to her flower beds and was always looking for “a sliver of something sweet.”

More than anything, Helen was a proud mother and “Gan Gan” to her family. She treasured time spent with her grandchildren and held especially fond memories of playing cars and reading books with them.

In recent years, Helen made her home in West End, where she formed many wonderful friendships and cherished the community around her.

She was a longtime member of St. James Catholic Church in Hamlet and later attended The Chapel in the Pines in West End.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2026 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the fellowship hall of St. James Catholic Church, Hamlet.

The funeral service will immediately follow visitation, at 1 p.m., in the church sanctuary. Burial will be held private by the family at Scholl Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of Kay and Jeff in Hamlet.

Memorials may be made to St. James Catholic Church, 1018 Hamlet Ave., Hamlet, NC 28345; or The Chapel in the Pines, 2125 Seven Lakes South, West End, NC 27376.

Harrington Funeral Home & Crematory is serving the Scholl family. Online condolences may be made at harringtonfuneralhome.com.
