James (Jimmy) Alfred Chappell Jr., 81, passed away peacefully on Aug. 27, 2026.
Born in Rockingham, Jimmy lived a full life centered around family, friendship, hard work, and making the most of every moment.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his beloved son, Chip; and his parents, James Alfred (Chap) and Sara Wilson Chappell.
He is survived by his loving wife, Gayle Coln Chappell; his son, Chad Chappell and daughter-in-law Meredith; his granddaughter, Sydney; and his sister, Bobbie Sue Ormsby.
Throughout his life, Jimmy had a long and dedicated career in administration, beginning with White Poultry Company and later with Perdue Farms. He continued his career with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services before eventually settling into retirement — and his beach chair — full-time.
Jimmy loved both playing and watching basketball. He also was an avid tennis player. He was always up for traveling, particularly to some tropical place. Jimmy especially loved spending time at Ocean Isle Beach where some of his happiest moments were spent surrounded by family and friends, sitting on the beach, and enjoying the Friday night concerts.
To know Jimmy was to know someone who never met a stranger. He had a gift for making people feel valued and welcome and was always the life of the party. His warmth, humor, personality, and love for life and other people will be remembered by all who knew him. Jimmy leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a legacy of love, laughter, friendship, and family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sept. 12, 2026 at 2 p.m. at Ambassador Presbyterian Church, 1010 Schieffelin Rd., Apex.
