ROCKINGHAM — A long kickoff return, a passing score, a blocked punt and a recovery for a touchdown, and a two-point conversion all capped by a game-ending interception, were the key plays in the final 5:50 of Friday’s football game.
The Richmond Raiders did all of that and scored 15 unanswered points to erase a nine-point deficit to defeat West Forsyth High School 36-30.
Ending its non-conference schedule, Richmond didn’t let a slow first three quarters stop it from improving to a game above the .500 mark.
Jayden Hamilton sparked the comeback effort with a long kickoff return that led to a touchdown pass from Evan Hodges to Amer Morrison on the next play.
Trailing by two points, Ty Covington blocked a punt with 3:13 left in the game. Preston Fann was there to grab the ball and score the game-winning touchdown.
Moments later, after Hodges threw a two-point conversion to Chance Crowder, Hamilton intercepted a pass near midfield to stall the Titans’ efforts at their own rally attempt.
Hodges and Morrison connected for two passing scores in the win, and Hodges also threw a TD to senior Keonta Pegues. Covington rushed for one touchdown in the first half.
The Raiders (3-2) have their bye week coming up and will open Mid-South Conference play Friday, Oct. 3, at Pine Forest High School (1-4).
