ROCKINGHAM — Several acts of violence were reported across Richmond County this weekend, though details are scarce.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to multiple calls about a shooting on Nannie Lane, west of Rockingham, around 2:38 a.m. Sunday.
RCSO says one man was shot and sent to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Rockingham Police Department issued a statement Monday addressing “a number of violent incidents,” but did not give any details.
According to a post from Richmond County Schools, several incidents involved students.
School officials said that while there is “no direct indication of a threat to our schools or students,” there may be an increased presence of law enforcement and security on campuses “out of an abundance of caution.”
“Our investigative teams have been working closely together since the incidents were reported and are actively following leads in each case. Investigators are making progress toward identifying those responsible and taking appropriate enforcement action.
“We understand the concern these incidents may cause in our community. We remain committed to working together to protect our residents and hold those responsible accountable.”
Sheriff Mark Gulledge also issued a statement.
“The violence reported in Richmond County over the weekend is deeply concerning,” Gullege said. “We recognize that residents want answers, I can assure you that our investigators have been working all weekend long and have not let up.”
According to the agencies, investigators with RCSO and RPD are “working closely together … and are actively following leads in each case … making progress toward identifying those responsible and taking appropriate enforcement action.”
“We understand the concern these incidents may cause in our community,” reads the RPD press release. “We remain committed to working together to protect our residents and hold those responsible accountable.”
“Protecting this community is our responsibility and our commitment,” the sheriff said. “We will continue working with our law enforcement partners to seek accountability for these acts of violence.”
The RO attempted but was unsuccessful in contacting both RPD and the sheriff’s office on Monday. None of the incidents occurred in Hamlet, according to Chief James Carsto.
