Police investigating shooting at Rockingham apartment complex

ROCKINGHAM — Two people were injured during a shooting at a local apartment complex early Sunday morning.

According to Rockingham Police Chief George Gillenwater, gunfire erupted around midnight Aug. 9 at the Crown Point Apartments and a second wave “popped off” as police were responding.

A female victim was reportedly shot in the leg. Gillenwater said a responding officer applied a tourniquet, “possibly saving her life.” She was taken to Moore Regional Hospital. A male was also reportedly shot in the leg during the incident and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Gillenwater said one of the suspects shot at police and officers returned fire. No officers were shot and the chief doesn’t believe the suspect was hit, due to no one being admitted to area hospitals with gunshot wounds. However, the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation was called in, he added.

More than 100 shell casings were recovered from the scene from multiple types of firearms, according to Gillenwater. In addition to the two injuries, he said projectiles entered several of the apartments and vehicles.

“It’s a miracle that nothing else bad happened that night,” Gillenwater said.

As of early Monday afternoon, no charges had been filed and the case was still under investigation.

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office assisted in the case.

The Rockingham Police Department is also investigating a reported armed robbery at Jersey Mike’s Subs Sunday night. No details are currently available in that case.
