JV game ends in 0-0 tie

ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior varsity soccer team started last week’s game against Union Pines on the right foot, but eventually fell 4-2.

“We came out and played a good first half, probably the best 40 minutes we’ve played,” coach Chris Larsen told the RO.

Kerick Hairston was the first to find the back of the net for the Raiders. The second Richmond goal came from Spanish exchange student Gabriel Canero.

“I thought we made some good halftime adjustments to kind of manage some tiredness (and) fatigue and what I thought the second half was gonna be based off the first half,” Larsen said.

A misjudged kick by the Raiders led to a goal for the Vikings, who went on to score three unanswered goals in the second half, the final with six minutes to go, according to Larsen.

“I told the guys that’s a hard pill to swallow, after having such a positive first half to come out … just not be able to continue playing like we did in the second half,” Larsen said. “But… We can use it as a learning tool to help us go down the stretch.”

The junior varsity game ended 0-0 tie, bringing their record to 5-1-2.

The varsity Raiders are now 4-4-2 heading into Monday’s match-up at St. Pauls. This week, Richmond also has an away game at Terry Sanford on Wednesday before hosting Purnell Sweatt on Thursday.
