ROCKINGHAM — Investigators with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office have filed more than 20 criminal charges against a man accused of supplying fentanyl to multiple people.
Warrants allege that 37-year-old Quarjuan Waltez Gilchrist, of the Hamlet area, sold unspecified quantities of fentanyl to five individuals — each on at least two occasions — in late April.
Gilchrist is also accused of using a single-story duplex apartment on U.S. 1 to keep and sell the potent synthetic opioid, as well as having multiple baggies for packaging.
Warrants were issued on April 28 and May 2, charging Gilchrist with: 10 felony counts of selling or delivering fentanyl; five felony counts of possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver fentanyl; one felony count of maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance; and six misdemeanor counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.
Gilchrist is being held in the Richmond County Jail on a combined $1,010,000 secured bond.
Court records appear to show Gilchrist waived his right to counsel, however, the documents uploaded to the court system website do not appear to be complete, as none of the boxes are checked and the defendant’s signature is not included.
His next court appearance is scheduled for May 14.
Records show Gilchrist was indicted in 2024 on charges of maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. That case is still pending.
Gilchrist has the following prior convictions, according to records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction:
2007 - possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under the age of 21 after consuming a controlled substance, two counts of resisting a public officer
2009 - speeding to elude arrest, driving while license revoked
2011 - selling a Scheduled II controlled substance, possessing stolen goods
2017 - possession of a firearm by a felon, intimidating a witness, two counts of selling a Schedule II controlled substance, three counts of possession with intent to sell a Schedule II controlled substance, two counts of selling or delivering a Schedule II controlled substance, possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance
2021 - possession of a firearm by a felon, resisting a public officer (Hoke)
2023 - fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance
Records show Gilchrist was released from custody on Jan. 27 after serving a 90-day confinement in response to violation in connection to the Moore County conviction.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
