ROCKINGHAM — A man with outstanding warrants from three years ago was recently apprehended after allegedly breaking into a vehicle.
Deandre Malaike Byrd, 28, is accused of “pulling on the door handle of a Chevrolet SUV, then opening the door and going into the car” on Aug. 17.
A warrant was issued to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office the same day, charging Byrd with one felony count of breaking and entering a motor vehicle.
Records show Byrd was also served with a warrant — issued to the Rockingham Police Department — from April 2023, alleging that he broke into a vehicle and stole $400 in cash and $80 in coins, as well as keys and transmitters for the vehicle. He also allegedly stole a pack of batteries from a Dollar General store on the same day.
In that case, Byrd is charged with breaking and entering a motor vehicle, felony larceny and misdemeanor larceny.
Byrd was booked into the Richmond County Jail where he is being held on a combined $25,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 3.
Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Byrd has previously been convicted with various spellings of his first and middle names, and with the last name Johnson.
Byrd was convicted in Hoke County on two counts of misdemeanor larceny and one count each of breaking and entering vehicles and receiving or possession of a stolen vehicle in 2019. He was also convicted in 2022 of felony breaking and entering in Richmond County.
Records show his parole ended a month prior to the alleged incident in 2023.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
