ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has charged a man with shooting into a nearby home.

According to an arrest warrant, 60-year-old Charles Ray Johnson discharged a weapon into an occupied home on Madison Avenue in the Jefferson Park community. The warrant does not indicate how many people were inside the home or what type of weapon was used.

Records indicate that Johnson lives about a tenth of a mile from the site of the alleged shooting.

Johnson was arrested and charged with discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was booked into the Richmond County Jail where, at the time of writing, he was being held without bond.

Online court records show Johnson was charged in March with communicating threats, misdemeanor crime of domestic violence and injury to personal property, but those charges were dismissed on April 6.

Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Johnson was most recently convicted in 2019 on two counts of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance.

Other prior convictions include:

1998 - felony larceny

2006 - receiving stolen goods

2015 - possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia

2017 - delivering or selling a Schedule II controlled substance, maintaining any place for a controlled substance

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
